Seuss Ends Up Third in Some Fast Company at Modified Madness
19-year-old Youngster Beats Out Modified Veterans For Podium Finish
When there are $10,000 dollars on the line in race, anything can happen. What happened to Andy Seuss is that he was able to beat out some of the best Modified racers in the country and bring home a third-place finish at the Viveiros Insurance Modified Madness 100 at Seekonk Speedway (MA) on Wednesday night
Seuss was able to accomplish this feat by holding strong and keeping his car on the outside as he worked his way up through the field from his 14th starting position. However while his car was working on the outside, the majority of the cars out on the track were choosing to ride low.
“It seemed like a lot of people were bottom-feeders,” said Seuss. “Our car just was hooked on the outside, that’s for sure. I really couldn’t get it down on the bottom it was so free. We passed every single car on the outside, we didn’t make a single pass on the inside because the car was just too free. We needed those long runs and that one long run we had, when we got up to the third the first time we were reeling
in the leaders no problem. That’s just how our car was set up. I guess we should have known, with $10,000 dollars on the line there are going to be a lot of cautions so we just didn’t get quite the long runs that we needed.
“I just had to keep the car on the outside, it was really good out there. If I could run my own line it was fast but if I had to pinch it at all it was real, real free. Other than that we’ll just put that in the notebook and try to use it next time.”
At one point during the race it looked as though Seuss would be able to get out front as he started to get by the second place car of Louie Mechalides.
“Lou [Mechalides] was protecting that spot pretty good and I don’t blame him, there was a lot of money on the line. I was ahead of him at one point and like I said just got pinched to the bottom. I couldn’t really do that with my car tonight so he got by me. I was on the outside of him one time and he pushed right up into me so he couldn’t really decide which line he wanted, but that’s racing.”
To finish third in a competitive race with such a high purse is a great accomplishment. To have it come in a season that has been full of ups and downs makes it that much more enjoyable when all is said and done. Seuss has had an eventful season that has run a gamut of emotions from the joy of beating the best in the business to win the Florida Speedweeks Modified championship to the disappointment of coming one spot short in qualifying for what would have been his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut at New Hampshire International Speedway.
“Overall it was very good, this team needed this,” added Seuss. “We seemed to run into a rut lately. We’ve been very, very fast but just couldn’t put the finishes together.
“I’m happy, happy for all my sponsors, Manchester Urology, Rockingham Boat, happy for the True Value series to get the top three positions and I had a lot of fun racing with Chuck Hossfeld for third at the end. Overall we’re happy and we’ll take it to Monadnock.”
